Who makes an enchilada that ‘vegans, vegetarians, and any enchilada fan will love’ ?

The back of the box for the organic Black Bean Enchilada says its one that ‘vegans, vegetarians, and any enchilada fan will love’.

And — it contains one of my favorite ingredients: nutritional yeast.

Okay, what company makes an organic and vegan enchilada?

Let’s see, there’s Amy’s Kitchen, Trader Joe’s … but I don’t think either of those have nutritional yeast .. who else?

Would you ever guess Safeway’s!? That’s right, that mainstream merchant has introduced a new line of foods “O Organics” distributed by Omnibrands, Inc (basically a Safeways subdivision or what-not).

A vegan organic enchilada with nutritonal yeast at Safeway’s. And, for the record, all the ingredients are real words/related to real foods and spices, no chemically sounding derivatives. I’m totally speechless but no longer hungry.

Not only does it have everything I like to see in a product — it’s organic, has the word vegan, tastes great — I can buy it locally without having to travel to a specialty store in a large city. For folks who are vegan and live in a large city like San Francisco where Whole Foods, Rainbow Grocery and a plethora of smaller natural food stores exist, until you live in a small town, it’s hard to realize how difficult it can be to find those yummy vegan convenience foods.

I’m looking forward to seeing what else Omnibrands unveils. I’ve already written them asking for vegan whole wheat sliced bread. If they can carry vegan bread, make their organic canned beans more competitive in pricing, they’ll go a big way in getting my business over Trader Joe’s. They already sold me on the organic peanut butter.
