GenV in PETA Magazine

Generation V PETA Article

The recent PETA magazine features a spread all about us — Generation V. Actually it was about vegan kids and the new generation of veg*ns!!

On our inaugural genV website, launched back in 2002, we had this really nifty flash animation of a tomato wheel rolling across the page. It also hosted the letter writing tool designed in support of the Bay Area’s Shameway campaign, spearheaded by our friend Alka, who later left the Bay Area to work for PETA.

When (San Francisco) Bay Area Vegetarians became more established and had it’s own website, the GenV website changed to focus more on our podcasting and blogging, but if you’re easily impressed, here’s the original GenV t-shirt designs on Cafe Press.

Anyways, even locally, here in the SF Bay Area, we know more and more vegans who are raising vegan children, and the PETA article is a good read. One interesting fact they point out is how the average I.Q. of vegan kids is around 17% higher than nonvegan kids.

Montara .. the end of the world

Montara - The end of the worldWith Hwy 1 closed and not slated to re-open until end of September (weather and progress on repairs permitting), we definitely feel as if we live in the biggest cul-de-sac in the Bay Area. We can no longer travel northwards, but everything is south now via Half Moon Bay or HMB to reach 92, also known as the road to the outside of the world.

I had one horrible carpool last week. We agreed to leave late one morning, at 6 am, and it took us an hour to drive about 7 miles between Moss Beach and Half Moon Bay. A bicyclist easily passed us, and I seriously thought about leaving the carpool and walking back to my car and going home. Aside from that, the normal coastside departure at 5:30 am is working great. (My gosh, it’s now Normal to depart at 5:30 am .. )

We went to San Mateo on Saturday. As we started the journey on 92, Chris commented how light the traffic was in the other direction. We soon figured out why as traffic came to a standstill. There was a big accident on Skyline/35 with an overturned truck. The radio news reported it would be open in a few minutes. That delay cost an extra 60 minutes in standing and then really slow traffic .. and the accident had happened an hour ago.

We saw several cars had pulled over to the side, some apparently in need of assistance with their car hoods open. A tow truck was already there providing road side assistance to one traveller.

While the city of Half Moon Bay is encouraging people to come and visit the coast, most commuters will tell you the opposite – stay away, especially during commute hours. We have definitely curtailed travelling by car. Not only is gas expensive, but the road to HMB (Hwy 1) and beyond (92) are slow unless you’re travelling at odd hours.

Check out this photograph taken travelling north from HMB to Montara .. Montara .. the end of the world.

Adventure Presenting Animal Rights Philosophy to the FBI">Adventure Presenting Animal Rights Philosophy to the FBI

Interesting article by Charlotte Laws on her adventure lecturing to the FBI at their request.

I received a strange phone call at my Los Angeles home from an FBI Special Agent Instructor. I’ll call him Andy.

It turned out Special Agent Andy wanted me to fly to Quantico, Virginia (near Washington D.C.) to lecture law enforcement executives and managers from around the world about animal philosophy, keeping in mind “the mindset and methodologies of terrorists and the government’s response.”

It was an unusual request—even for an animal rights advocate, such as myself, with a doctorate in philosophy–so I did what anyone would do: I contacted my family, friends and criminal attorney.

I don’t really have a criminal attorney, but I have a friend who regularly handles high-profile cases. He furrowed his bushy brow and cautioned, “Don’t do anything. Let me check this out first. The FBI railroad innocent people all the time.”

Charlotte Laws also authored a chapter of the book, Igniting a Revolution: Voices in Defense of Mother Earth (published April 2006), which discusses The Animal Liberation Front.

Veg CSI AdHow cool is this?

Being a big CSI fan I thought I’d share.

Jorja Fox, who plays Sara Sidle on the hit TV show CSI hopes to generate the same amount of buzz for vegetarianism as she has for forensic science. In her new ad for PETA, Fox encourages people to “investigate vegetarianism”—something she’s been doing for 20 years.

Also on the site – Win a personal note from Jorja Fox along with a sleek metal vegetarian “forensic kit” filled with tons of delicious fake meats and other vegetarian treats from Food Fight! Grocery.

McCartney and Mills to separate">McCartney and Mills to separate

McCartney and Mills Sad news. Paul McCartney and Heather Mills are going their seperate ways after four years of marriage.

Of course this is the buzz all over the world press.

Both have done a lot for the animals since they got together.

For me the question is, will they both stay active for animals? One of them? Neither of them? Who knows. Crap.
