Great News – SB1578 Signed into Law

SB1578 will prohibit a person from tethering, fastening, chaining, tying, or restraining a dog to a doghouse, tree, fence, or any other stationary object for longer than three hours in any 24-hour period. Californians can now call on their local animal control, police, or sheriff’s departments to report violations.

Thank you everyone who wrote, called or emailed on this.

Please thank Governor Schwarzenegger for signing SB1578 and ask him to sign AB 2862, which would establish minimum standards for the housing, sanitary conditions, and veterinary care of more species of animals who are sold in pet stores:

Butterball’s House of Horrors">Butterball’s House of Horrors

This morning PETA released the details of a 40-day undercover investigation. PETA investigators were in a Butterball slaughterhouse in Arkansas. They found workers punching and kicking birds, slamming them against handrails and trailers (one bird was slammed so hard that her spine popped out), sexually assaulting birds and more. You can read more about it at their new Web site, www.ButterballCruelty.com.

Please send the video and webpage to everyone you know, including your friends and family (and encourage them to send it to others, too) so that we can spread the video around as much as possible before Thanksgiving. More people learning about this investigation equals fewer people buying dead birds.

Ingrid Newkirk recently said that the animals’ greatest enemy is silence. The gentle birds being killed can’t ask humans to stop hurting and eating them. But we can ask on their behalf, and this investigation is a powerful way to expose their suffering.

Huge a Vegetarian Day – Sept 29th">Huge a Vegetarian Day – Sept 29th

Huge a Vegetarian Day - Sept 29thNo matter what your diet may be, you have to admit that vegetarians are pretty darn huggable, and with more than 20 million vegetarians in the world, chances are pretty good that everyone knows a few.

On September 29, PETA2 is going to set up the largest worldwide group hug of vegetarians ever—and they need your help to make it happen!

Whether you’ve been vegetarian since birth or you still eat meat, mark your calendar for Friday, September 29, to hug your vegetarian boyfriend, girlfriend, roommate, brother, or sister, then sign up and tell PETA who you’re going to embrace on “Hug a Vegetarian” Day. They’re going for a world record here, people, so be sure to hug every last vegetarian you can find!

Spare Farmed Animals: Leaflet campuses near you!">Spare Farmed Animals: Leaflet campuses near you!

It’s never too late to go back to school, ESPECIALLY when you’re participating in Vegan Outreach’s Adopt a College program! The goal of this program is to get veg*n information into the hand of young, open-minded students. Convincing a student to go veg*n is one of the best ways to reduce animal suffering. After all, a lifetime of eating veg*n can prevent a lot of animal suffering/slaughter. With this program, every bit of leafleting helps to give exposure to the tremendous cruelty and suffering involved in factory farming.

I am very inspired by the effectiveness of this program and others who will leaflet regularly for hours a day/week (one person distributed over 13,000 leaflets in ONE semester). So, although, leafleting is not my favorite or best activity, and I’m not even NEAR giving away that many, once a month I’ll leaflet for 30 minutes with WHY VEGANs brochures. I’ve been participating in this program for about 2 years. 30 minutes is not much, but it is better than doing zero.

The Adopt a College program is a project of Vegan Outreach, a non-profit dedicated to reducing animal suffering. They have a great website filled with more information and practical essays about effective advocacy. It’s easy and free to register/participate. If there’s not a college near you during daytime, many colleges have evening classes. You can also support this program by donating to support someone else’s outreach (VO gets request all the time from people for literature).

WHY VEGAN is one of the brochures printed by Vegan Outreach that talks about different reasons to go vegan. Many people think this is the single most effective piece of literature to leaflet with. Decide for yourself and read everything online at

http://www.veganhealth.org/colleges

In response to people saying “I like meat!”, Vegan Outreach developed a different brochure called “EVEN IF YOU LIKE MEAT”.

For anyone who is interested in leafleting, but has never leafleted before, if you would be interested in a practice leafleting session, please let me know. I’m not an expert, but I have gotten more comfortable doing it. And there are several folks who really excel at it. There is also a special Yahoo! Groups list for folks participating in the AAC outreach, and they are very helpful/supportive if you have questions.

So, if you are looking for an effective way to spend 30-60 minutes, leafleting at a college is one of the best ways to help. From a numbers perspective, more farmed animals die or suffer for “food” production than in any other animal exploitation. So…. please, think about leafleting a college near you!

Andronico’s ends its sale of battery cage eggs!">Andronico’s ends its sale of battery cage eggs!

Andronico’s Market, a 10-store grocery chain based in the San Francisco Bay Area, will no longer sell eggs from chickens confined to tiny battery cages. Bill Andronico, president of the company, told East Bay Animal Advocates: “We have plans to be 100 percent cage-free on October 1, 2006. We take all issues around this matter very seriously, from the welfare of our employees to the welfare of the hens.”

Andronico’s Market joins Whole Foods Markets, Wild Oats Natural Marketplace and other retailers around the country that refuse to carry eggs from caged hens. Christine Morrissey, president of East Bay Animal Advocates, stated, “Andronico’s Market is taking a positive step by refusing to carry eggs from battery caged hens, and other grocers across the Bay Area should follow its lead.”

Thank Andronico’s for taking a bold stand against animal cruelty.

The Humane Society of the United States and Doris Day Animal League Merge">The Humane Society of the United States and Doris Day Animal League Merge

Two of the nation’s top animal protection organizations announced today that they are joining forces in a corporate combination that will result in increased public policy activity and coordination on animal welfare issues and further streamline operations among national animal advocacy groups.

“The Humane Society of the United States is delighted to join with the Doris Day Animal League to create an even more powerful voice for animals,” said Wayne Pacelle, HSUS president and CEO. “I have been an admirer of Doris Day and her organization for many years, and it is a privilege now to be able to work so closely with her and the organization.”

Big news for the animals.

First it was the Fund for Animals, and now Doris Day Animal League.

To put it into prespective, this makes the combined annual budget about five times that of PETAs.
