Visiting Animal Place

One of my favorite places to visit is Animal Place, a sanctuary and education center for farmed animals in Vacaville.  I like to wear my big straw hat, because the sun is strong in Vacaville.

On Saturday, April 11th, I’ll be visiting with a group from Bay Area Vegetarians.  This is my fifth annual tour of Animal Place.  Visiting Animal Place is a reminder to me as to why I’m vegan and why I need to be an activist to promote veganism — for the animal’s sake.

The tour starts with a hayride into the sanctuary.  Then Marji and other staff/volunteers give us a tour of Animal Place, share the animal’s stories with us, we share treats and awe for the animals.  Then the BAVeg tour ends with cool refreshing lemonade and a vegan food party picnic.

If you’re close enough to visit, make the trip before they move.  Or be a virtual visitor and check out the Animal Place blog. In anticipation of my tour to Animal Place next Saturday, I’d like to share some of my favorite photographs of the lucky critters that call Animal Place home

Hear Mite Roar – no tax on CA vet services

Mite says: "No tax on veterinary medical services!"

Mite says: "No tax on veterinary medical services!"

Mite read about the Governor’s plan to add a 10.5%  tax on veterinary medical services for critters like him.  He wasn’t very happy about it. He doesn’t consider medical care as a “luxury” service that needs a 10.5% tax — healthcare is a basic necessity for all animals who are injured and ill.

To aid our state in its budget shortfall,AnimalRighter suggests instead that fines be collected from factory farms that break laws.

Please call Governor Schwarzenegger at 916-445-2841 and urge him to remove the “Fido Fine” from the budget proposal.  The vote on this could happen soon so please don’t delay in calling.  You can also help by contacting your state representatives.  Contact info can be found at votesmart.org

HELP Animal Place Mooooooooooooove!

There are a handful of groups that I support every year, and Animal Place, a sanctuary and education center for farmed animals in Vacaville, CA, is one of them. I took a group of 25 Bay Area Veg folks to their sanctuary early last month. It was unseasonally hot, and I don’t even have fur or feathers. Despite the heat, we all had a great time. You can browse some photos in the BAVeg gallery

We learned that they have an exciting opportunity right now — to move from their over-grazed, water scarce 60-acre sanctuary & education center in Vacaville to 590 acres of rolling pastures in the California foothills of Grass Valley.

Room to grow means more rescues, more outreach, more education. Mudslides in winter, and searing temperatures in summer make life difficult for the animals at the current Vacaville site. With one well dry, Animal Place’s water situation is tenuous, at best.

At the new location in Grass Valley, pastures are irrigated year-round, ensuring a constant supply of water for the rescued animals. It also offers better weather; it is 10 degrees cooler year-round. (I can certainly appreciate that!)

Let’s do more than hope Animal Place raises their necessary funds. Let’s help them raise the necessary funds!

If you are in the San Francisco Bay Area, please join Bay Area Vegetarians on June 17th for vegan pizza party & boutique fun(d)raiser for Animal Place.

You can read more information in the BAVeg Blog

If you don’t live close enough to attend the benefit, I hope you will support Animal Place with a donation, by sponsoring an animal, etc.
